Economic Development

The Village of Niles contains nearly 4 million square feet of retail space in a variety of shopping centers including Golf Mill Mall, Four Flaggs Shopping Center, Pointe Plaza, and Village Crossing Shopping Center, among others.  The Village generated over $1.5 billion in retail sales in 2019.  The Sterling Organization is planning a comprehensive redevelopment of Golf Mill Mall which may include a mixed-use complex featuring retail, restaurant, entertainment, residential, office, hotel, and recreational uses.  The Golf Mill Mall redevelopment is anticipated to be a catalyst for a renaissance in retail activity along both the Milwaukee Avenue and Golf Road commercial corridors.  The developer plans to restore Golf Mill to its former prominence as one of the Chicago area's premier regional retail destinations.

Mayor Alpogianis unveiled the concept site plans for the Golf Mill redevelopment at the Niles Chamber of Commerce and Industry State of the Village Luncheon on January 27th at Lone Tree Manor. The Sterling Organization, owners of Golf Mill Mall, and Village staff have collaborated over the last year to finalize the concept site plan for the property. The concept site plans and renderings represent the culmination of regular meetings with the developer and their architects. The master-planned, mixed-use development will feature new retail and restaurant facilities, public gathering spaces, water features, attractive landscaping, a pedestrian promenade, Golf Mill Park, a new water mill, approximately 300 luxury apartments, and a total mixed-use environment.

Niles is also home to a number of business and industrial parks.  Some of the major employers include Shure, FedEx, the Bradford Exchange, Coca Cola, Walmart, Home Depot, Target, Costco, and Fresh Farms, among others.  The primary role of the Department of Economic Development is to direct business attraction, business retention, marketing, grant administration, tax increment financing districts, and Village incentive programs.  Economic Development efforts are also focused upon numerous other development and redevelopment initiatives throughout the Village including the following:
