The Abandoned Newborn Infant Protection Act, often referred to as the Safe Haven Law, offers a protected legal alternative to infant abandonment. This Act allows the parents of an infant to remain anonymous, if they so choose, and avoid both civil and criminal liability for relinquishing care of a child. The Act also states that pursuing an established adoption plan is preferable to relinquishing the child and the Act provides a safe alternative as opposed to harm or neglect. Any parent seeking to relinquish care of their infant can do so at either NFD Fire Station at any time.
