NFD Explorer Post #28 is a program that allows young adults, who are interested in the fire service, to gain first-hand experience alongside sworn NFD Firefighters. Explorer Post #28 invites young men and women, ages 14-21, to participate in our program and become familiar with both the NFD and other career opportunities within the fire service. Post #28 meetings regularly take place every other week and Explorers will have the opportunity to participate in community events, public education and outreach programs, fire department functions, and more. Explorer meetings will focus on topics such as firefighting tools and equipment, SCBA use, Engine and Truck Operations, EMS, Hazardous Materials, as well as a variety of other topics. Explorers who have been active members within Post #28 for at least one year will have the opportunity to participate in NFD ride-along’s where they will be able to ride alongside sworn NFD Firefighters as they respond to emergency calls for service. Post #28 members will be issued a uniform as well
as Firefighter Turnout Gear so that they can safely perform hands-on firefighting skills. This program emphasizes team-work, accountability, fitness, leadership, and camaraderie and allows its’ members to determine whether a career in the fire service is something they wish to pursue.
