Fire Prevention Week 2020
The Village of Niles recognizes October 4-10, 2020 as Fire Prevention Week. This year's theme for Fire Prevention Week is, "Serve up Fire Safety in the Kitchen." According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), cooking is the number one cause of home fire injuries. In order to help prevent home kitchen fires, please apply the following kitchen fire safety tips when you're cooking at home, work, or anywhere else you may be cooking.
- Have a three foot "Kid-Free" zone around your stove, oven, grill, or any other hot surface used to prepare food.
- Keep your cooking work space clutter free, remove anything that can burn away from your stove or oven.
- Set a timer when you are cooking. A timer can help minimize distraction and can remind you to check on the food you are preparing.
- Keep a lid nearby when cooking so you can cover small grease fires. Covering a small grease fire will eliminate the Oxygen which will cause the fire to go out.
We have created a series of interactive video clips to highlight some of this year's Fire Prevention Week take-home points related to both kitchen and home fire safety. We also have a virtual Fire Station and Fire Engine tour along with a vehicle extrication demonstration. Please feel free to watch and share these videos and we hope you are able to implement some of the recommendations found within them.
