Groups for Seniors


All our weekly and monthly groups are ongoing and free-of-charge to Niles Residents ages 55 and up, as well as Senior Center Members unless otherwise noted.  Groups meet at the Niles Senior Center unless otherwise noted.  Groups are lead by a LCSW connected to the Niles Family Services Department.

Relaxation, Meditation, and Mindfulness

Tuesdays 1-2pm in Room 229

In this weekly class, you will learn about, discuss, and practice many types of relaxation, meditation, and mindfulness techniques. Research studies have shown that benefits may include: Decreased levels of anxiety and depression, improved cognition, improved memory, focus and concentration, improved sleep, and increased ability to cope with stress.

EAT MOVE SLEEP

Tuesdays 2:15- 3:15pm in Room 306

Join us for this fun and informative weekly class where you will learn new ways to eat, move, and sleep to improve your overall health and wellbeing. We will focus on easy, delicious, and nutritious food suggestions and creative ways to incorporate more movement into your day, and lots of tips for how to get a better night's sleep. 

QIGONG

Wednesday 2-3pm in Room 127 

Qigong is an ancient Chinese practice that combines deep breathing, meditation, and slow, rhythmic movements. It has many health benefits and is fun and easy to do. 

Elder Wisdom Circle

Wednesday 3:15- 4pm in Room 127 

Elder Wisdom Circle allows people the opportunity to share with each other their accumulated life wisdom, as well as get to know each other better.   

Widow and Widower Grief Support Group

Second Wednesday of each month 12:45-1:45pm  

This monthly group will allow participants to come together in a safe and non-judgmental place where thoughts, feelings, memories, stories and experiences, relating to the death of a spouse or partner, can be openly and freely expressed. The group will provide grief education, practical coping strategies, and self-care practices.

Low Vision Support Group 

First Thursday of each month 10-11:30 am in Room 127

Participates can share experiences, gain support, learn new tips and ideas, discuss various aspects of their sight impairments, and exchange resource information.

WITS Workout 

Second and Fourth Thursday of each month 10:45-12pm in Room 127

Did you know that social connectedness and intellectual engagement are two lifestyle factors that contribute to your brain's health? Simply put, coming together and learning new things is food for your brain! Join us to engage with interactive puzzles and games and learn what you can do in your daily life to keep your brain healthy. 

Let's Just Get Together 

First Thursday of each month 2:30-3:45pm in  Room 127

Are you an older adult who sometimes feels lonely, isolated, and disconnected? Are you single, divorced, or widowed? Have your recently moved or retired? Are your children and grandchildren very busy with their own lifes and don't have much time to hang out with you? Please join us once-a-month to authentically connect with others who are actively looking to make friends with common interests. We have meaningful conversations, provide one another with social support, and also share lots of laughs.

Free for Niles Residents age 55 and up and Veterans.

25$ for Niles Senior Center and Niles Family Fitness members

Are you interested in improving your overall health and well-being. Sign up for a one-time, comprehensive lifestyle assessment, followed by specific recommendations in: Diet and Nutrition, Function/Mobility/Pain, Physical Activity and Exercise, Sleep, Self-Care, Stress Management/Coping Skills, Brain Health, and Social Support and Relationships. The assessment will be provide by a Licensed Clinical Social worker who specializes in both geriatrics and wellness. 

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia 

Free for Niles Residents age 55 and up and Veterans.

CBT-I is the preferred, first line treatment for chronic insomnia in adults. It is evidence-based and hse been extensively researched and proven to be highly effective. CBT-I is recommended and endorsed by the American College of Physicians, The National Institutes of Health, The American Psychological Association, and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Unklike sleeping pills, which only serve to mask the symptoms of insomnia, CBT-I  provides a comprehensive learning program, utilizing specific thoughts and behaviors, which effectively restore the body's natural sleep mechanism. This is a 6 week individualized program that is proved by a LCSW who is  CBT-I certified.
