Groups for Seniors
All our weekly and monthly groups are ongoing and free-of-charge to Niles Residents ages 55 and up, as well as Senior Center Members. Groups meet at the Niles Senior Center unless otherwise noted.

NEW! *Open to the Public* Finding Love Again: A Second Chance for Single, Divorced, and Widowed Seniors
This monthly group will focus on helping senior men and women to navigate the complicated dating world of 2022. The first half hour will focus on discussion, including online dating assistance, learning how to meet people more organically, and the dating questions, struggles, and experiences of participants. The remaining 45 minutes will allow participants to socialize and connect with each other.
The group will be co-led by both a female and male social worker from the Family Services department.
Group will meet the first Thursday of each month from 3:30-4:45pm and is open to all regardless of residency or Senior Center Membership.
Light Refreshments will be served.

Coping with Chronic Worry
Wednesdays: 12:45-1:45pm (Third Wednesday of each month)
In this monthly group, we will explore what worry is, what purpose it serves, and how it affects us and those close to us. We will also discuss and practice a variety of effective mind/body strategies for learning how to manage worry. Additionally, participants will be encouraged to share their own worry related feelings, experiences, and struggles as well as helpful tips and suggestions. Starts May 18th
Widow/Widower Grief Support Group
Wednesdays: 12:45-1:45pm (Second Wednesday of each month)
This monthly group will allow participants to come together in a safe and non-judgmental place where thoughts, feelings, memories, stories and experiences, relating to the death of a spouse or partner, can be openly and freely expressed. The group will provide grief education, practical coping strategies, and self-care practices. Starts May 11th.
Chronic Pain Support Group CANCELLED effective 9/1/2022

Thursdays: 1-2:00pm (Weekly) Meets on 3rd floor
In this weekly group, participants will be given the opportunity to openly share their feelings and experiences with physical pain, how it impacts them, and what has proven helpful. We will also discuss and practice a wide variety of mindfulness-based, non-pharmacological ways to manage pain. Additionally, participants will learn how to effectively communicate their pain-related issues and needs to health care providers, family members, and friends in order to optimize support. Starts May 5th.
Caregiver Support Group
Mondays: 1:00-2:00pm (Weekly)
This weekly group is for individuals who are caring for a family member with a chronic physical condition such as Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, ALS, COPD, Heart Failure, as well as many other physical conditions which require a primary caregiver. The group will allow participants to give and receive emotional support from other caregivers, exchange helpful ideas and suggestions, and learn a variety of self-care and mind/body practices, as well as effective communication techniques. Starts May 2nd.
Mondays: 2:30-3:30pm Wednesdays: 2-3:00pm (Weekly)
Qigong is an ancient Chinese practice that combines deep breathing, meditation, and slow, rhythmic movements. It has many health benefits and is fun and easy to do.
Elder Wisdom Circle
Wednesdays: 3:15-3:45pm (Weekly)
Elder Wisdom Circle allows people the opportunity to share with each other their accumulated life wisdom, as well as get to know each other better.
Tuesdays: 10-11:00am (Weekly)
In this weekly group, we will discuss important lifestyle choices associated with the promotion of healthy aging. Topics will include nutrition, movement, sleep, injury and fall prevention, stress management, self-care, brain health, social connection, and finding a source of meaning and purpose. We will also practice a variety of mind/body techniques to enhance our overall health and well-being as we age.
Relaxation, Meditation & Mindfulness
Tuesdays: 1-2:00pm (Weekly)
In this weekly group, you will be introduced to a wide variety of relaxation and meditative techniques, as well as learn how to incorporate mindfulness into daily life.
Healthy Relationships Group
Tuesdays: 2-3:00pm (Weekly)
This weekly group focuses on how to improve ALL of your relationships, including spouses or partners, adult children, grandchildren, nieces/nephews, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. The focus will be on improving your listening and communication skills and how to give and receive more ongoing support.
Senior LGBT+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender) Discussion
Wednesdays: 12:45pm-1:45pm (First Wednesday of each month)
This monthly group will provide an open, safe, and supportive environment in which a variety of subjects, based on the group’s preferences, will be discussed. LGBT allies, supporters, and friends are also welcome in this all-inclusive group.
Becoming a Proactive, Empowered Patient
Wednesdays: 12:45-1:45pm (Last Wednesday of each month)
This monthly group will focus on learning about your basic and fundamental rights and responsibilities as a patient, how to prepare in advance for office visits, how to optimize healthcare interactions through effective communication, how to locate a health care professional suitable for you, and how to become more informed, using a variety of reputable and trustworthy resources.
Thursdays: 2-3:00pm (Weekly) Meets on 3rd floor
As human-beings, most of us want to be happy and avoid suffering and pain. In fact, many of our choices and decisions in life are based on our desire to be happy. Happiness can, however, sometimes be fleeting, elusive, and difficult to sustain.
In this weekly group, we will learn what neuroscience, ancient philosophy, and modern psychology all have to say about happiness, the myths of happiness, and how to train our brain to become happier, despite genetics and life circumstances.
We will also discuss our own definitions of and experiences with happiness, the obstacles that get in our way, and what we truly believe does provide us with ongoing happiness.
