Engineering
Designed to Meet the Needs of Niles
The department's Engineering Division is responsible for both the engineering and water supply sections. The functions of the engineering section vary, but primarily involve the design of water mains, streets and sewers, both new and replacements. In addition, members of the engineering section are also responsible for construction inspection of work completed in the right-of-way.
Public Works takes pride knowing a lot of the work performed within engineering could easily be contracted to consulting firms; nevertheless, it has chosen to assume many such responsibilities and only contracts for major projects, saving the village thousands annually.
Engineering Staff
Unlike many municipalities who contract out all of their engineering services, the Village of Niles has a full-service Engineering Division within the Department of Public Works. Staffed by a Village Engineer and three Civil Engineer II employees, the Engineering Division performs many vital functions in the village, and at a savings to residents when compared to the cost of a private engineering firm.
Division Functions
The Engineering Division's main functions are project management, inspection, capital improvement planning, and Geographic Information System (GIS) maintenance.
Project Management
As a full-service division, the Engineering Division designs, bids, and oversees the construction of improvements to the village's infrastructure, including street, water, sewer, and sidewalk projects.
