Hazardous Waste Disposal

Household hazardous waste requires special precautions when being disposed of. Here are some guidelines for the disposal of some common household items as well as suggested alternatives you can use:
  • Aerosols: Put only empty cans in the trash and never burn or dispose of cans in a trash compactor. Use non-aerosol products as an alternative.
  • Degreasers: Utilize the entire container or give it away. As an option, choose a strong detergent type over a solvent type.
  • Motor Oil and Transmission Fluid: Recycle oil and transmission fluid at a neighborhood service station that accepts these items.
  • Paint Strippers and Solvents: Let the item settle, and pour off cleaner for reuse. Pour sludge into a container and seal, or wrap in newspaper and throw in the trash. Sand the item, or use a heat gun, as an alternative to paint strippers.
